Akhmetov's DTEK began purchasing American gas: the first ship arrived in Greece
Rinat Akhmetov 's DTEK energy holding company has begun importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States. The first shipment of 100 million cubic meters arrived on Friday, December 27, at a Greek terminal from Louisiana on the Gaslog Savannah vessel, the company's website says.
After regasification, natural gas is transported to Ukraine via pipelines.
D.Trading, a part of the DTEK group, expects that gas supplies from the US will become regular and will be carried out not only to Greece, but also to the northern part of Europe and the Baltics.
"Such cargoes not only provide the region with a flexible and secure source of energy, but also further weaken Russia's influence on our energy system. We are very grateful to the United States for the strategic contribution they make to Europe's energy security through such supplies," said DTEK CEO Maksym Timchenko, commenting on the arrival of the first gas tanker.
- In June 2024, DTEK signed a gas supply contract with the American company Venture Global.
- The American company plans to supply liquefied gas from terminals on the Gulf Coast of the United States to many ports in Europe, including Greece, which has a pipeline to Ukraine. So far, there are agreements for supplies until the end of 2026, but the companies plan to conclude a 20-year contract.
- In 2023, the United States became the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas, overtaking Qatar.
