On Tuesday, September 9, Hungary signed the "largest and longest" contract with a Western supplier in the country's history – with the British oil and gas company Shell. This was reported by minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary Peter Siyarto and hungarian newspaper Kisalföld with reference to his statement.

"Today we are announcing the signing of a new, long-term contract, the largest and longest contract we have ever signed with a Western supplier."siyarto said.

Speaking at the Gastech conference in Milan, the Hungarian Foreign Minister emphasized that the country has always supported the diversification of energy sources and continues to try to improve security of supply by attracting new suppliers.

Earlier, the Hungarian government, along with other countries, appealed to the European Commission to expand the capacity of gas pipelines in Southeast Europe, but was denied.

"They said they were not ready to further finance the region's gas infrastructure, as natural gas is not fashionable, it is gradually being phased out."siyarto said.

He also criticized the EU REPowerEU programaimed at reducing the dependence of the bloc's member states on Russian energy.

Sijjarto noted that the new contract with Shell will not affect the supply of Russian energy resources to the country "due to geographical and infrastructural features."

He emphasized that Hungary is landlocked, and the capacity of alternative pipelines is insufficient to meet all the country's gas and oil needs.
