The European Union has finally approved a phased ban on Russian gas imports

On Monday, January 26, the Council of the European Union finally approved a phased ban on the import of Russian gas. This was reported by it is reported on its website.

The ban on imports of Russian pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) will come into force in the near future – six weeks after the regulation enters into force, but a transitional period is provided for previously signed contracts.

Therefore, a complete ban on LNG imports will take effect from the beginning of 2027, and on pipeline gas – from autumn 2027.

Violations of the new rules are punishable by fines starting from 2.5 million euros for individuals and 40 million euros for companies.

By March 1, 2026, EU countries must prepare national gas supply diversification plans. EU countries that still import Russian oil will also have to submit diversification plans, but the ban does not yet apply to them.

In the event of an emergency and a serious threat to security of supply, the European Commission may suspend the import ban for up to four weeks.
