In April 2025, Ukraine pumped 258 million cubic meters of natural gas into underground gas storage facilities, which is 44% less than in the same period in 2024 (460 million cubic meters). This is evidenced by calculations of ExPro.

This year's injection season started later – on April 17 (last year – March 31). On the first day, only 2.1 million cubic meters were pumped into the UGS facilities, and by the end of the month, the rate increased, reaching a maximum of 35 million cubic meters per day on April 30.

As of May 1, Ukraine's underground storage facilities held 5.7 bcm of gas, 33% less than a year ago. Active reserves amount to more than 960 million cubic meters, and the overall level of filling is 18.4%.

To properly prepare for the heating season, Ukraine must increase gas imports. To repeat last year's figure of 12.92 bcm as of November 1, an additional 7.2 bcm must be pumped in. Part of this will be covered by domestic production, while the rest – 3 to 5 billion cubic meters – will have to be imported, despite losses in the sector due to shelling in February-March.

  • Since the beginning of 2025, Naftogaz Group has imported about 800 million cubic meters of gas to compensate for losses and build reserves in underground storage facilities.
  • On April 3, Forbes Ukraine reported that Naftogaz plans to import 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas to successfully complete the next heating season. Based on current prices, the purchase of this volume will cost about UAH 90 billion.
