Ukrtransgaz applies new technology to create 3D models of gas storage facilities for the first time

Ukrtransgaz, the operator of Ukraine's gas storage facilities, has conducted vertical seismic profiling for the first time to create 3D models of gas storage facilities. About said the company's press service.
"Simply put, we looked deep underground to get a clear "image" of the geological structure, on the basis of which we model our storage facilities. This is necessary for a better understanding of how underground gas storage facilities are arranged and how to manage them safely and efficiently," Ukrtransgaz explained.
The study of the Bilche-Volytsko-Uherskoye UGSF well in Lviv region was performed by Ukrtransgaz geophysicists together with the Horizonty service company and specialists from the Gas Transportation Institute.
Ukrtransgaz concluded contract for the research on May 13, 2025 after Horizons won the open tender. The cost of the work is UAH 3.6 million (including VAT).
The purpose of the research is to study the velocity characteristics, stratify the reflection horizons, clarify the structural and tectonic structure, and predict the geological section of the wellbore space.
- In June 2025, Naftogaz Group announced the start of a new stage of 3D seismic surveys in western Ukraine. The works will cover an area of 230 square kilometers and will be carried out by JSC Ukrgasvydobuvannya.
