Ukrzaliznytsia starts procurement of gas piston power plants, first tender announced

JSC Ukrzaliznytsia has announced an international tender for the purchase of gas-powered piston power plants with a total capacity of 215 MW, the company’s press service reported on Tuesday, May 6.
The procurement will take place via the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s procurement portal.
Ukrzaliznytsia plans to secure a €180 million loan from the EBRD to finance a project involving the purchase and installation of small-scale gas-fired power generation facilities with a total capacity of up to 270 MW ahead of the 2025/2026 heating season. Additionally, the project is expected to receive a £10 million investment grant from the UK government, along with €56 million in grants from other sources.
The initial tender includes the installation of containerized gas piston power plants ranging from 1.8 MW to 3.5 MW in capacity.
Bidders can submit proposals until June 16, 2025.
Ukrzaliznytsia will be the first state-owned company outside the energy sector to commit to building a network of gas-powered piston power plants at its own facilities.
- According to the Cabinet of Ministers, Ukraine plans to commission approximately 1 GW of new power generation in 2025. In 2024, it commissioned 967 MW of distributed generation capacity.
