Germany is introducing additional measures against Russia's so-called shadow fleet, which continues to transport oil in violation of Western sanctions. This was reported by the press service of the German government.

"Our goal is very clear: we are increasing pressure on the Russian shadow fleet and protecting the Baltic Sea," said German Foreign Minister Johann Waehnel.

Since Tuesday, July 1, German authorities have begun inspecting tankers passing through the waters of the Baltic and North Seas.

In particular, the presence of valid oil pollution insurance is checked, which is often absent in vessels of the shadow fleet.

Russia is actively using this fleet to circumvent sanctions imposed after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Many of these tankers lack insurance coverage from reputable companies and avoid entering European ports to conceal their activities.
