Russian forces attacked two Ukrainian Black Sea ports in the Odesa region on Wednesday afternoon, January 7, killing one person and injuring at least five others, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communities and Territorial Development, Oleksiy Kuleba, said.

"Russia has once again struck two ports in the Odesa region. Unfortunately, one person was killed and at least five people were injured," Kuleba wrote on social media.

The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority said that the ports of Pivdennyi and Chornomorsk were targeted.

According to Kuleba, the attack damaged port infrastructure, administrative buildings, and oil storage facilities.

  • Russia has stepped up strikes on energy and port infrastructure in Odesa and the surrounding region in recent weeks. On December 30, Russian forces attacked the ports of Pivdennyi and Chornomorsk, damaging two civilian vessels. On the night of December 26, Russia carried out a large-scale strike on Ukraine’s logistics infrastructure, damaging three vessels simultaneously.
  • On Christmas night, a Russian attack on port and industrial facilities in the Odesa region killed one person and injured two others. Earlier, on the night of December 22, Russian forces struck Ukraine’s largest port, located north of Odesa, setting fire to 30 containers of flour and vegetable oil.
