Russia has not been elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organization, the UN agency dealing with maritime safety. About reported Ministry of Community and Territorial Development.

During the 34th IMO Assembly in London, the Ukrainian side presented to the member states a detailed argumentation on the incompatibility of Russia's actions with the principles of international maritime law and its status as a member of the Council.

"This is yet another defeat for the Russian Federation in the elections to the governing bodies of international organizations – after failures in UNESCO and the OPCW – a clear continuation of its growing international isolation." commented iMO Assembly decisions Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sybiga.

"The community has clearly shown the aggressor where it belongs – outside of civilized democratic decision-making. The country that systematically attacks portsthe country that is killing civilian sailors and blackmailing the world with hunger has no moral right to manage global shipping security," said the Vice Prime Minister for Reconstruction, Minister of Communities and Territories Development Oleksiy Kuleba.

Russia was one of 11 countries applying for membership in the IMO's governing body in category A (countries with the greatest interest in providing international transportation services) and was the only one not to be elected to the Council in 2023.

november 28 Assembly chose china, Greece, Italy, Japan, the United States, Norway, Panama, Liberia, South Korea, and the United Kingdom have been elected as members of the IMO Council for 2026-2027.
