Ukraine and Slovakia to increase the capacity of border crossing points

The cargo capacity of the Maly Berezny-Ubl'a checkpoint on the Ukrainian-Slovak border will be increased to 5 tons. The agreement was signed following intergovernmental consultations in Kosice on October 17, said premier Yulia Sviridenko.

In addition, an agreement was reached to launch a pedestrian and bicycle crossing "Uzhhorod – Vysne Nemecke" by the end of this year.

UPDATE at 22:02. Protocol on amendments to the current intergovernmental agreement on border crossing points signed by the Vice Prime Ministers Oleksiy Kuleba and Peter Kmiec, reported Ministry of Community and Territorial Development.

The reconstruction of the Uzhhorod-Vysne Nemecke checkpoint is already underway. At the same time, the company is preparing to launch a passenger terminal that will separate cargo and passenger flows and increase capacity by 20%.

After the launch of the Kyiv-Bratislava railway route the extension of the train service to Vienna and Prague is being prepared. Separately, the parties discussed the possibility of a free transfer of electric locomotives to Ukraine, which will ensure the movement of the European gauge on the Uzhhorod-Chop-Koshytsi route.

They also agreed to reduce border crossing time for passengers. To do this, the number of border and customs officers at the railway checkpoint will be increased.

"Ukraine and Slovakia are working on the agreement on joint control. Feedback from the European Commission is expected. After signing the document, the waiting time at the border will be reduced, and the infrastructure will become more efficient and convenient for people and businesses," said Oleksiy Kuleba.

Pros data According to the State Border Guard Service, there are five checkpoints on the Slovak-Ukrainian border: road (Uzhhorod – Vysne Nemecke and Ubl'a – Maly Berezny), rail (Pavlove – Matyovce and Chop – Cierna nad Tisou) and pedestrian (Mali Selmentsi – Veľké Slemence).

Currently, the cargo capacity of the Malyi Berezny-Ublia checkpoint is 3.5 tons.
