Death rate in Ukraine exceeds birth rate three times
In the first half of 2024, 250,972 people died in Ukraine, which tripled the number of newborns at 87,655. The birth rate decreased by 9% compared to the same period last year, reported Opendatabot with reference to data from the Ministry of Justice.
The birth rate decreased by one and a half times this year, compared to the same period before the full-scale invasion, when 132,595 children were born.
The most newborns are currently registered in Kyiv city (9,695 babies), Lviv (7,923 babies), Dnipropetrovsk (6,962 babies), Odesa (6,197 babies) and Kyiv (4,947 babies) oblasts.
The fewest children are born in the frontline regions: Donetsk (702) and Kherson oblasts (221 children). In Luhansk Oblast, not a single baby was registered for half a year, since there is almost no free territory left, and the Ministry of Justice does not take into account information from occupied territories.
The fewest deaths were in the front-line Kherson (2,334), Donetsk (5,753) and Chernivtsi (5,422) oblasts. The most deaths were registered in Dnipropetrovsk (26,374), Kharkiv (17,999) and Kyiv (17,449) oblasts.
Currently, there are three deaths per one newborn citizen. In 2018-2020, for example, there were two deaths per newborn.
On August 2, 2024, the central bank predicted that the return of Ukrainians from abroad would begin in 2026.
