Russia has occupied 18 GW of Ukrainian power generation capacity, including hydroelectric, thermal, and nuclear power plants, notably the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest in Europe, as reported by Ukraine's Minister of Energy, German Halushchenko.

Halushchenko highlighted Russia's "insane energy terror," aimed at plunging Ukraine into darkness.

Over three years, Russia has launched over 30 massive attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, causing billions of dollars in damage.

Despite these challenges, Halushchenko emphasized the resilience of Ukraine's energy system, stating, "No energy system in the world has faced such challenges. Yet, despite Russia's relentless attempts to destroy our infrastructure, Ukraine's energy system remains intact and functional."

The energy sector has also suffered significant losses, with hundreds of energy workers killed or injured while performing their duties under fire, and many more who lost their lives defending Ukraine in the army.

Halushchenko recalled that just hours before the full-scale invasion, Ukraine disconnected from the energy systems of Russia and Belarus.

"Under extremely challenging conditions, our energy system endured 21 days in isolation and ultimately joined the European system on March 16, securing energy independence," he added.

In collaboration with U.S. partners, Ukraine has broken Russia's monopoly on producing nuclear fuel for VVER-440 reactors.

Additionally, the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine was halted on January 1, 2025.
