The Ukrainian government is going to develop a fundamentally new salary model for teachers, Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lisovyi sais in an interview with the specialized publication Osvitoria.

According to him, this will be one of the priority tasks of the new leadership of the ministry.

"What should be the teachers' salary is the first question that the president asked me during our interview. I named the amount that I consider worthy, but, unfortunately, we cannot reach it now," the minister said.

He said that as part of the reform, the ministry is going to determine the criteria on which the teacher's salary will depend.

The minister does not yet know when exactly the reform will take place as it depends on the availability of funds in the budget. Currently, the deficit of the state subvention for teachers' salaries exceeds UAH 8 billion ($217.7 million).

"Now I can say only one thing: there is a desire and there is a goal to build fundamentally new salary models for teachers," Lisovyi said.

Oksen Lisovyi became the new Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine in March 2023. Prior to that, he held the position of director of the Minor Academy of Sciences since 2010. With the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, he joined the army as a volunteer.

In March, the state spent UAH 87.4 billion ($2.38 billion) on salaries in the budget sector, of which UAH 67.3 billion ($1.83 billion) is the remuneration of military personnel.
