The launch of the e-hryvnia in Ukraine has been postponed because of the war, National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Governor Andriy Pyshnyi said at a press conference on October 23

According to Pyshnyi, the NBU intends to draw on the successful experience of other countries in introducing a national digital currency.

Yes, the war. We currently believe that it is the war that gives us grounds to postpone this initiative. We will use this time to find the best possible technical solution and study the experience that other central banks are gaining. [...] It is precisely because of the war, and considering the investments this project may require, that the NBU Board has decided to defer its implementation," Pyshnyi explained.

  • In an interview with LIGA.net , in September 2024, Pyshnyi said the NBU planned to conduct open testing of the e-hryvnia with real users and market participants to assess the feasibility of large-scale issuance. However, he emphasized that the use of the e-hryvnia would remain voluntary.
