More than 1800 old cars were sent to the scrap yard in Ukraine: ten models written off

In September 2025, Ukrainians wrote off 1454 cars, 323 trucks, and 61 buses. About writes Institute for Automotive Market Research.
Every month, Ukrainians apply to the service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs about two thousand times to have their vehicles culled. The procedure is free of charge and afterwards the car can no longer be registered again.
The average age of cars written off in September was 27 years for cars, 26 years for trucks and 24 years for buses.
Most often, Ukrainians say goodbye to old VAZ models – from the Kopek (2101) to the Nine (2109). This is the logical conclusion of the era of Soviet cars that served for more than 30-40 years.
The Institute notes that their massive write-off is the main reason for the rejuvenation of the average age of the fleet.
The ranking also includes Daewoo Lanos, GAZ Gazelle and GAZ Volga, cars that were actively used in the 2000s, in particular as taxis or company vehicles.

"In fact, the market is getting rid of the oldest and most worn-out ballast, making way for younger cars imported from abroad," the ICA emphasized.
The oldest vehicle to officially leave the Ukrainian fleet in September was a GAZ-51 truck manufactured in 1953. It had been in service for more than 70 years.
- Experts of the Automotive Market Research Institute analyzed data for the first half of 2025 and identified the most popular car models in Ukraine with hybrid powertrains (HEV and PHEV).
